Story 3
The Caring Tree – Sheikh Hassan Seylan Abas
Read the story.
A long time ago, there was a huge tree. A little boy loved to
come and play around it every day. He climbed to the treetop, ate the fruits
and took a nap under its shadow. He loved the tree and the tree loved to play
with him.
Time went by, the little boy had grown up and he no longer
played around the tree every day.
One day, the boy came back to the tree and he looked sad. “
Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy. “ I am no longer a kid. I do
not play around trees any more,” the boy replied. “ I want toys. I need some
money to buy them.” “ Sorry, but I do not have any money . You can pick all my
fruits and sell them. Then you will have some money,” said the tree.
The boy was so excited. He plucked all the fruits on the tree
and left happily. However, the boy failed to come back for a long time. The
tree was sad.
One day, the boy who was now a young man, returned. The tree
was so excited to see him again. “ Come and play with me,” said the tree. “I do
not have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for
shelter. Can you help me?” asked the young man.
“ Sorry, but I do not have a house. You can chop my branches
off to build your house,” answered the tree.
“ Oh,thank you,” said the man.
So the man cut all the branches of the tree and left happily.
The tree was left alone again and sad for a long time.
One fine day, the man returned and the tree was delighted. “
Come and play with me!” the tree said.
“ I am getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can
you give me a boat ?” asked the man.
“ Use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and
be happy,” answered the tree. So the man cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He
went sailing and again he never showed up for a long time.
Finally the man returned after many years. He looked weak and
old.
“ Sorry, my friend. But I do not have anything for you now.
Not even fruits,” the tree said.
“ No problem. I do not have any teeth to bite,” the man
replied.
“ No more trunk for you to climb on,” continued the tree.
“ I am too old for that now,” the man said.
“ I really cannot give you anything. The only thing left is
my dying roots,” the tree said with tears.
“ I do not need much now. Just a place to rest. I am tired
after all these years,” the man replied.
“ Good! Old tree roots are the best place to lean on and
rest. Come sit down with me and rest,” said the tree.
The man sat down, leaning against the roots. The tree was
glad and smiled with tears.

THE PIED PIPER OF HAMELIN - by Ladybird
Read the story.
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful little town called
Hamelin. The people of Hamelin were all very happy, until the day the rats
came. Thousands of rats came to Hamelin. There were big rats and little rats,
thin rats and fat rats. There were rats in all the houses and rats in all the
shops.
“There are
rats on my table!” said a man. “ There are rats under my chair!” said another. “
There are rats in my kitchen!” called one woman. “ There are rats in my bed!”
called another. “ There are rats all over the house!” called a little boy. “
Make these rats go away!” called a little girl.
The people
of Hamelin went to see the mayor. “ Get rid of these rats!” they shouted.
“ What can I do?” said the mayor. “ There are rats in my
house too. I can’t get rid of them.”
But the people said, “ You must make the rats go away. If you
don’t, we will choose another mayor.”
The Pied Piper
went to see the mayor. “ The rats have all gone,” he said. Please give me the
money you promised me.” “ No,” said the mayor. “ I have no money to give you.”
“ If you don’t give me the money, I’ll play another tune and
you will regret.” said the Pied Piper. “ You can do whatever you like,” said
the mayor.
The Pied Piper
went out into the streets and began to play another strange tune. In all houses
and in all the streets, the children stopped playing. Then, one by one, they
ran after the Pied Piper.
The people
of Hamelin called to the children to stop, but they did not hear. They followed
the Pied Piper through the streets and over the river. They followed him out of
the town and up a mountain. Suddenly the mountain opened up and the Pied Piper
went inside. The children followed him. Inside the mountain was a beautiful
land full of trees and flowers and birds.
“ My friends are inside the mountain with the Pied Piper,” he
said. “ They will never come back.” The people of Hamelin was angry. “ Where
are our children?” they shouted to the mayor. “ You must go and find them .”
So the mayor
went out looking for the children. He was looking for years. He is still
looking for them now.

There was once a boy named Ing
Zhuang. He had a kitten which was beautiful. The kitten had four soft little
paws and had a round furry body. Ing Zhuang loved his kitten very much.
Ing Zhuang also had a naughty little
brother. His little brother liked the kitten too but he was rough. He held the
kitten too tightly. He dropped the kitten on the ground and he frightened the
kitten.
One day, the kitten disappeared. Ing
Zhuang called her name but she did not come. He looked around the backyard but
she was not there. Then he saw something strange. It was a box, an upside-down
box. The box that walked.
“ I have never seen a walking box
before” said Ing Zhuang. “ it would be fun to have one.” He forgot about his
kitten and ran towards the box. The box ran too. Ing Zhuang ran after the box.
There was an old woman who was
crossing the road. She saw the walking box. “ I have never seen a walking box. I
must have it. ” Without wasting any
time, she started running after Ing Zhuang. Then an old man saw the box. “ How
strange!” he said. “ A box that runs! I would like to have it . I will catch
it.” So he too ran after the old woman, Ing Zhuang and the box. A dog saw the
box. “I want that box,” it barked and chased the old man, the old woman, Ing
Zhuang and the box down the road.
Then, BANG ! The box hit a bush. It stopped
running. Ing Zhuang caught it. “ Got you at last,” he said.
The old woman, the old man and the
dog bumped into Ing Zhuang. They fell down. Ing Zhuang lifted the box. And what
do you think he found ? His kitten ! He hugged the kitten tightly.
“ You don’t know
how glad I am to see you again,” he said.
Tears of joy ran down his face. “Miaow,” said the kitten. “ How did you get in there ?” asked Ing Zhuang. “ It was me,” said a small voice. It was his little brother.
“ I’m sorry,” he said. “ I put her
there. I was angry with you. I’ll never do it again.”
Ing Zhung put his arm around his
naughty little brother. And home they went , Ing Zhuang, his little brother and
the walking box.
